Your spine works hard every day, but most of us don’t give it the support it deserves. Unfortunately, several common habits throughout everyday life can quietly impact your spine over time. Let's take a look at five everyday activities that could be setting you up for long-term pain—and health tips onhow to correct them.

1. Poor Posture at Your Desk

Slouching over a desk compresses the spine and leads to muscle imbalances. Try a standing (sit-to-stand) desk or ergonomic chair, and take breaks every 30 minutes.

2. Looking Down at Your Phone

“Tech neck” is a real problem. Holding your phone at eye level and practicing neck stretches/ strengthening exercises can help prevent and offset the demands imposed on the spine and surrounding musculature throughout the day.

3. Sleeping on a Bad Mattress

A sagging or overly soft mattress doesn’t always support your spine properly; although this can be individually dependent. Invest in a medium-firm mattress and sleep on your back or side with a supportive pillow.

4. Carrying a Heavy Bag on One Shoulder

Uneven weight distribution causes strain on the spine and surrounding musculature. Use a backpack with two straps or alternate shoulders frequently. 'One-strapping' may have been cool once upon a time but there is nothing cool about back pain!

5. Skipping Stretching Pre/ Post Exercise Tight muscles pull on the spine and joints and limit mobility. A proper warm-up is essential to ensure adequate blood flow, proper strength-tension relationship in the muscle and elevate heart rate. A proper post-workout 'cool down' can help maintain spinal flexibility and balance of musculature.

Healthy spine habits start with awareness and proper education on how to implement the proper, safe steps to correct these habits. If you're already experiencing discomfort, Chiropractic care can help correct misalignments, imbalances and prevent further issues.
